What background checks do you run on pros?
Background checks are stage 3 of our four-stage vetting process. The full deep-dive is in our background-checks blog post; the operational summary is here.
What we check
- 7-year nationwide criminal history — county, state, and federal records covering the past 7 years.
- National Sex Offender Registry — searched against every state and territory.
- SSN trace — verifies the SSN matches the applicant's identity and surfaces any aliases or address history that point to additional jurisdictions to search.
- Live-selfie ID match — government photo ID compared to a live selfie via face recognition (this is stage 1, not strictly a background check, but it protects against impersonation).
Who runs the checks
Checkr (PBSA-accredited, FCRA-compliant). Same provider used by major rideshare and delivery platforms. Reports are returned to Made Glow's trust-and-safety team for review — applicants don't review or contest reports through us; they contest disputes directly with Checkr per FCRA process.
Automatic disqualifiers
The following result in automatic rejection:
- Any conviction for a violent felony in the past 7 years.
- Any conviction for a sexual offense (no time limit).
- Any registered sex-offender status.
- Any conviction for fraud against vulnerable populations (elder fraud, healthcare fraud).
- Any active warrant.
Case-by-case review
Older or non-relevant offenses (a traffic-related misdemeanor from 6 years ago, a youthful-offender adjudication that's been sealed) are reviewed under the EEOC's Fair Chance Act guidance. We weigh: how recent the offense was, the nature of the offense, the relevance to providing in-home beauty services, and any rehabilitation evidence the applicant provides.
Re-screening
Every 12 months, we re-run the full screen. New criminal events, new registry hits, or active warrants flag the pro for immediate suspension pending review. About 1.4% of pros fail re-screening per year and are removed from the platform.
What we do NOT check
We don't pull credit reports (irrelevant to the work and discriminatory for many cohorts), we don't check civil litigation history (also irrelevant), and we don't ask about non-conviction arrests. Mental-health history is never collected.
Reporting concerns
If you have a specific concern about a pro you booked, see how to report a safety concern.
