Art Basel Miami Beach roughly doubles the city's effective population for one week each December. Hotel occupancy hits 100 percent. Restaurant reservations vanish. And the calendars of every senior beauty pro in Miami and Miami Beach compress into the tightest week of the year. If you're going to be present and photographable for Basel — gallery dinners, fair previews, brand activations in the Design District, late-night Wynwood — you need a beauty plan that respects the calendar. Here's the working one.

The Basel week shape

Art Basel Miami Beach proper opens with VIP previews on Tuesday and Wednesday, then the public fair Thursday through Sunday. Around it: Untitled in a tent on Ocean Drive, NADA in the Ice Palace, Scope, Pulse, Design Miami in the Design District. Brand parties run nonstop from Monday's prelude through Sunday's wind-down. Wynwood, Edgewater, and the Design District host most of the post-fair events; gallery dinners are everywhere from the Faena to private homes in Coconut Grove and Coral Gables.

The beauty implication: you're getting ready 3 to 6 times across the week, often twice in a single day (lunch event, then evening dinner). That's not a single big appointment — it's a string of medium ones with quick re-sets between.

Lead time

This is the most-asked question, and the answer is firmer than for any other week of the year:

Same-day or next-day for any of these during Basel core week (Tuesday through Sunday) is unrealistic. The booking pattern that works is to lock a recurring 4pm slot on three or four days of the week with the same pro — that locks you in and gives the pro a predictable shift.

The pre-Basel week-before reset

The week before Basel is the right time for the work you don't want to do during fair week:

  1. Color refresh. Tuesday or Wednesday before Basel for a gloss or root touch-up. Color settles in 24 to 48 hours.
  2. Lash full set. 5 to 7 days before so adhesive cures fully. Plan a quick fill mid-Basel if you're going hard.
  3. Facial. 5 to 7 days out. Skip aggressive peels — Basel is photographed and you don't want lingering redness.
  4. Brow shape. Whenever feels right, but at least 3 days before the first fair-day photo to let the shape settle.

The day-of pattern

Two patterns dominate Basel week beauty bookings:

Pattern A — single touchpoint, evening event. Pro arrives at your hotel suite or rental at 4pm. Hair and makeup take 90 to 120 minutes. You're out the door by 6pm for a 7pm gallery dinner.

Pattern B — double touchpoint, lunch + evening. Pro arrives at 9:30am. A clean, lighter look (hair down, soft makeup) for a noon brand activation or lunch. Then a 5pm re-set: smoky eye over the existing base, hair in a low chignon, fresh lip. The pro stays for the re-set or a second pro comes in. This is the most-booked structure.

Hotel-suite logistics during Basel

Most senior pros service the major Basel hotels constantly during the fair: the Faena, the Edition, 1 Hotel South Beach, the Setai, the W South Beach, the Four Seasons Surfside, the Standard, the Mondrian. Building access is rarely an issue but lobby gating can slow things down during VIP windows. Loop the concierge in 24 to 48 hours ahead.

If you're staying at a Design District or Wynwood Airbnb (more popular with younger Basel crowds) — see our vacation-rental guide for the building-access rules.

The look

Basel's beauty culture runs editorial. The pros who work the week heavily lean into structured hair (sleek low chignons, micro waves, slick-back ponytails), textured matte skin (soft glow but not dewy — photography-friendly), and a strong eye or a strong lip but rarely both. Lashes are louder than at most events; bold color on lid or lip is fully on-brand. Skip anything fussy or time-consuming — you'll be re-touching all week.

What it costs

Basel-week pricing is mostly the same as the rest of the year, except a few pros add a 5 to 10 percent premium on after-9pm bookings. Typical numbers:

For a heavy week (3 to 5 events), expect a total beauty spend of $1,800 to $3,800 plus tip.

The events to plan around

If you're new to Basel: Tuesday VIP previews are the most-styled night. The Friday gallery dinner circuit in the Design District is the second-most-styled. Saturday public fair days are looser. Sunday is recovery. Plan your two heaviest beauty days as Tuesday and Friday.

How to start

Browse senior pros at /services/makeup and /services/hair. For booking by city, start with Miami Beach. Lock the touchpoints in October or early November. By the third week of November, the week is sold out.
